What Donors Actually Look for Before Writing Big Checks
By Monique Ntumngia
Donors don’t fund passion, they fund proof. If you think a compelling story is enough to unlock six-figure funding, you’re going to stay broke.
1. Can you handle the money?
Before releasing $100k, donors check:
- Do you have financial management systems?
- Clean audit trail for past funding?
- Separation of duties in financial operations?
- Anti-fraud policies?
If your accounting is messy or non-existent, you won’t get funded.
2. Will you deliver what you promise?
Donors look for:
- Documented past program delivery
- Evidence that you’ve completed previous projects on time and on budget
- References from other funders or partners
No track record = no big checks. Start small, prove competence, then scale.
3. Can you measure impact?
Donors need data to justify their investment. They want:
- Baseline metrics (where beneficiaries started)
- Output data (what you delivered)
- Outcome data (what changed)
- Cost-per-beneficiary breakdown
If you can’t quantify impact, you’re asking donors to fund hope, which they won’t.
4. Is your governance solid?
Big funders audit your board composition, meeting minutes, conflict of interest policies, and succession plans.
Weak governance = high risk. High risk = no funding.
5. Are you strategic or reactive?
Donors fund organisations with 3-5 year strategic plans, not those that jump from crisis to crisis.
If you can’t articulate where you’re going and how you’ll get there, you look amateur.
6. Do you have co-funding?
Major donors rarely fund 100% of your budget. They want to see that you’ve diversified your revenue and that other funders trust you.
No diversification = dependency red flag.
Most NGO founders think donors reject them because their cause isn’t compelling enough.
Donors reject you because you haven’t built the institutional infrastructure that proves you can manage significant funding responsibly.
You want $200K, but:
- Your last audit was 3 years ago
- You have no M&E system
- Your board hasn’t met in 6 months
- You can’t show cost-effectiveness data
That’s why you’re stuck writing $5K proposals while structured NGOs are getting funded $50K and above.
As an NGO Strategist and NGO Evaluation Expert, I build the institutional foundations that unlock serious funding by working with:
- Founders launching NGOs who want donor-ready infrastructure from day one.
- Existing NGOs restructuring to meet institutional funder standards.
- NGO leaders needing strategy sessions on governance, strategy, and donor readiness
